HS codes, Schedule B and the HTSUS

US exports are reported under Schedule B numbers from the Census Bureau, and imports are classified under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States from the US International Trade Commission. The export rules state that the import and export codes used by the United States are based on the Harmonized Tariff System (15 CFR 30.1).

Schedule B for exports

Schedule B, the Statistical Classification of Domestic and Foreign Commodities Exported from the United States, holds 10-digit numbers administered by the Census Bureau (15 CFR 30.1).

Electronic Export Information reports the 10-digit Schedule B number. The 10-digit HTSUSA number can be reported in its place, except where the HTSUSA headnotes say otherwise (15 CFR 30.6(a)(12)). A correct number does not replace a complete and accurate description of the goods (15 CFR 30.6(a)(12)).

Filing is not required where the goods shipped from one exporter to one consignee on one conveyance under a single Schedule B or HTSUSA number are worth $2,500 or less, subject to the other conditions of Part 30 (15 CFR 30.37(a)). Search Schedule B at the Census Bureau.

The HTSUS for imports

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States Annotated is the listing of goods and their duty rates, developed by the US International Trade Commission, used to classify imported products (15 CFR 30.1). Search it at hts.usitc.gov.

On entry, the importer or customs broker notes the HTSUS subheading and the rate of duty for each article on the invoice or with the invoice data (19 CFR 141.90(b)). Claims under a free trade agreement put the agreement's prefix before that subheading: see the agreement pages.

Chapters

The first two digits of either number give the chapter. Each chapter page shows US exports and imports by country for 2025.
